To the Editor:
Friends of Acadia would like to thank the nearly 400 volunteers who participated in our 16th Annual Earth Day Roadside Cleanup. The last of the snow melted just in time to clear the ditches for this annual event that brings so many of us together in the spirit of keeping our communities beautiful!
Scouring shoulders and ditches, the volunteers collected more than 8,500 pounds of trash on approximately 150 miles of roadside throughout Mount Desert Island and in Trenton. The amount of trash collected is down by approximately 3,000 pounds from last year.
We thank the individuals who joined us, the many local businesses who recruited volunteers, and Hannaford for the water and snacks that fueled the volunteers. Our thanks, also, to the Maine Department of Transportation for picking up the bagged trash and to Bar Harbor Bank & Trust, Birch Bay Village, The Bluenose Inn, Burdick & Associates Landscape Design, Cadillac Mountain Sports, The First, N.A., The Gallery at Somes Sound, Galyn’s, The Knowles Company, Lynam Insurance & Real Estate, and Window Panes for their 2015 Event sponsorship. This event is successful because of the ongoing support of our local businesses and generous community members.
We encourage residents to celebrate Earth Day all year long by keeping the roadsides trash-free. Please dump your trash appropriately. Recycle what you can and put the rest in trash cans or dumpsters. With just a small amount of individual effort, together we can reduce the amount of trash that ends up on the roadsides in our communities.
