The Bass Harbor Head Light, built in 1858, is perhaps the most iconic of all the lighthouses along the coastline of Acadia. Most visitors have assumed the lighthouse is part of Acadia National Park–but in fact, it has long been a park in-holding administered by the U.S. Coast Guard. Now, the park has the opportunity to acquire the Bass Harbor Head Light and surrounding 2 ½ acres, but it will require help from those of us in the community.
Because the park does not have a dedicated budget for this undertaking, Friends of Acadia, and donors like you, can play an important role in helping to make this transformation possible. Your gift will help ensure the iconic Bass Harbor Head Light becomes a permanent cultural and educational resource in Acadia National Park, to be enjoyed for generations to come. See video below.
