The Rec Tech assists park staff in studying recreational use of the park. They maintain electronic trail counters on carriage roads and trails, use GPS to map and record condition of social trails and other sites of interest in the park, and administer visitor questionnaires and perform other routine monitoring and research tasks.
The goals of the Recreation Technician program in Acadia National Park are to:
- Inform park managers and the public about visitor use and impacts;
- Minimize visitor impacts to park resources and help ensure high quality visitor experiences.
In our scope of work we:
- Collaborate with university social science programs and participate in visitor impact research to support park needs;
- Conduct small scale research projects to understand visitor use;
- Inventory and monitor visitor use numbers, activities, behaviors, and impacts;
- Mitigate visitor use through site management practices and Leave No Trace (LNT) visitor education.
Projects include: Maintaining traffic counters, maintaining trail counters, Mapping social trails, administer visitor questionnaires, trail bridge inventory and monitoring, winter visitor use study, monthly visitation reports, trail observation studies, carriage road observations, and annual bicycle counts at Schoodic Peninsula.

When hiking on Acadia’s historic trail system, please “Leave No Trace” – walk only on the trail or durable surfaces, avoid stepping on or picking vegetation, and don’t modify trail cairns (or build new ones).
