Acadia’s Historic Carriage Roads Now Open to Pedestrians
April 22nd, 2025
April 22nd, 2025
Acadia’s historic carriage roads have reopened to pedestrians (foot travel) only. Carriage roads remain vulnerable to damage from bike and equestrian use due to the soft road surface, so these activities are prohibited for the time being. Please help us protect this treasured resource!
During spring thaw each year (aka mud season), warmer weather and wet conditions soften the carriage roads and make them susceptible to damage. The NPS temporarily closes the carriage roads each spring to protect them. The carriage roads are currently dry enough for pedestrians, but they need to dry a little more for bicycling and riding horses.
