Ride or Volunteer with MDI Wheelers

May 7th, 2024
Starting in June, MDI Wheelers will offer free rides on portions of Acadia National Park’s carriage roads. This is exclusively for Hancock County community members who are unable to walk without assistance.
Special tricycles, with Class 1 pedal-assist motors, have a front-mounted wheelchair. Made by Van Raam in the Netherlands, the Opair trike can accommodate “wheelers” for a safe ride. Staffed by volunteer “pilots,” the rides begin at the Eagle Lake boat launch and proceed around Paradise Hill and/or Eagle Lake.
Volunteers are needed to “pilot” the trikes and to act as safety riders. If you are interested in being a volunteer, a “Meet the Trike” event is scheduled for May 11 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Mellon Room of the Northeast Harbor Library.
Volunteer training will be conducted on May 18 and May 25.
